August Update

ANNIE B’s COMMUNITY DRIVE ENTERS FINAL YEAR

As reported in the Enterprise-Record last month, this August and September mark the final months of the Annie B Community Drive. During this period contributions to your Chico Friends of the Library are increased in amount if they are made through the Annie B’s Community Drive. This is a painless way to add to your support for CFOL and the library.  Plan to visit the North Valley Community Foundation website at http://www.nvcf.org/donate, which manages the fund drive, during August or September, to make your CFOL donation. Contributions to the Chico Friends of the Library enable purchases of books, subscriptions, other materials, equipment, remodeling and a variety of programs for children, teens, and adults. Your CFOL urges you to take advantage of this final opportunity to amplify the impact of your donation.

BOOK SALES CONTINUE

The members-only First Friday book sale will be held on Friday, August 5  from 2:00 to 4:00 pm in the Chico library’s conference room.  Don’t miss this opportunity to bask in the air conditioning as you browse the many bargain items in a more leisurely atmosphere than prevails at the regular Saturday morning (9:00 to 11:30 am) sales.  Invite a non-member friend to join you at the Friday sale to demonstrate one of the benefits of membership. Fill a shopping bag with books and pay only $1 for the entire purchase! Daily sales and discount specials on the specially designated shelves inside the library and in the lobby have proved to be extremely popular and a significant source of income for your CFOL.  Thanks to all the CFOL book sale volunteers who have made these efforts highly successful.

July Update

CHICO BRANCH HOURS RESTORED

As CFOL members will remember, the supplemental funding from the Chico City Council that enabled the library to be open seven days per week has been eliminated from the city budget. At its June 28 meeting, however, the Butte County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to increase library funding to restore open hours to a seven-days-per-week schedule. The new schedule, beginning on September 5, is anticipated to be:

Sundays – 1:00 to 5:00
Mondays – 9:00am to 5:00pm
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday – 9:00am to 7:00pm
Friday, Saturday – 9:00am to 5:00pm

It is rumored that public concern and displeasure with the shortened hours played a significant part in the decision of the supervisors. Thanks to all CFOL members and library patrons who helped bring this about, and especially thanks to the Board of Supervisors.

BOOK SALES

The CFOL members-only first Friday book sale takes place this month on Friday, July 8 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm in the library’s meeting room. Don’t miss this opportunity to browse our wide selection of gently used books, magazines, movies, and other materials. New items are continually added to the offerings.

And don’t forget the weekly Saturday morning book sales open to the public from 9:00 to 11:30 am in the same location. There are no better book bargains in town than the items offered for sale by your CFOL at these sales and on the special book sale shelves in the library. And please consider helping the dedicated book sale volunteers with this weekly task. Only about 45 minutes is required to set up or take down the materials for the sale. Call Helen Sutton at 530-588-4989 for more information and to volunteer.

SUMMER READING PROGRAMS CONTINUE

Chico branch library summer reading programs for children, youth, and adults continue through July 31. Events and prizes for the programs are sponsored by your CFOL. Visit the library for detailed information and to sign up. The theme for the children’s program this year is “Read for the Win,” a timely reference to the 2016 summer Olympics.
